Louis Bleriot crosses English Channel by air in 1909
The first ever flight across the English Channel by French aviator Louis Blériot on 25th July 1909. Relying on a 25-horsepower Anzani engine to power its 22-mile journey, the Blériot XI carried Louis across the Channel to win 1000 pounds in prize money.
