John Major in South Africa
Prime Minister John Major MP on
the first visit to South Africa by a British Premier since the
visit by then PM Harold Macmillan in 1960. He spoke to the
first multi-racial S African Parliament and offered the hand of
friendship between the two nations, stating that he believed
that hope had returned to the country. He and SA Pres Nelson
Mandela signed a cricket bat that had been already signed by the
SA and England Test Cricket teams.
