Hollywood Remembers Yul Brynner

The true story of Yul Brynner's origins remained a mystery until after his death. As revealed in his son's biography, Brynner was born in 1915 on Sakhalin, an island east of Siberia and north of Japan. At the Pitoef Repertory Company he served as an apprentice actor and stagehand, meanwhile studying at the Sorbonne.

He won his defining role as the King of Siam in The King and I on Broadway. Winning massive critical and public acclaim, Brynner performed the role 1,246 times and starred in the Hollywood remake in 1956, winning an Oscar.
