Watergate - Nixon Resigns 1974
President Richard Nixon resigned office on August 9th 1974, after addressing the nation on television the previous evening. He had been implicated in the Watergate Scandal for the previous year but denied knowledge or involvement. However, a secret recording was released on August 5th 1974 that revealed that Nixon authorized hush money to Watergate burglar E. Howard Hunt.
In light his probable impeachment by the House of Representatives, he resigned. Vice-President Gerald Ford was sworn in as President and Nixon received a blanket pardon from Ford which ended the possibility of his indictment.
