War in Rwanda, 1994

On April 6th 1994, a plane carrying Rwandan President Habyarimana and Cyprien Ntaryamira, the President of Burundi, was shot down as it was about to land at Kigali, capital of Rwanda. Both presidents were killed when the plane crashed. President Habyarimana was a Rwandan Hutu and it was believed that the Tutsi were behind the assassination.

Hutu military groups began rounding up and killing all Tutsi they could capture. The killing spread from Kigali to all areas of the country. Between April 6th and the beginning of July official figures said that 937,000 Tutsis died at the hands of the militias.
