USA Strategic Defense Initiative, 1983
In February 1983 US President Ronald Reagan wrote a letter to “the people of Europe” saying that he would meet the Soviet leader, Yuri Andropov, any time and at any place to discuss banning medium range nuclear weapons.
Vice President George Bush had an opportunity to read the letter on a visit to Berlin.
In March Reagan introduced the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) that would use ground and space-based systems to protect the US from attack by nuclear missiles.
