Tiananmen Square Massacre, 1989
In China there were a series of protests in and around Tiananmen Square, Beijing, between April and June 1989. The demonstrators, which included students, intellectuals and labour activists, were calling for democratic reform and economic liberalization. The government of the People’s Republic (PRC) used the military to crackdown on the protestors in Beijing.
Tanks finally cleared Tiananmen Square on June 4th but by that time many people had been killed or injured. The official government figures estimated that between 200 and 300 died, but other sources claimed between 2000 and 3000 lost their lives.
