The Inauguration of Richard Nixon 1969

Richard Milhous Nixon was sworn in as the 37th President of the United States on January 20th 1969. Nixon’s first foreign visit after his election was to France but one of his biggest domestic concerns in 1969 was the opposition to the Vietnam War.

In July 1969 Nixon visited South Vietnam, and met with President Nguyen Van Thieu and with US military commanders, he proposed the Nixon Doctrine, a strategy of replacing American troops with the Vietnamese troops, also called “Vietnamization.” To placate ant-war sentiment at home, Nixon announced the withdrawal of 25000 troops in June 1969.
