Hollywood Couples: Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn
Katharine Hepburn’s first film with Spencer Tracy was Woman of the Year in 1942. When she quipped, “I’m afraid I’m a little tall for you, Mr Tracy” he replied, “Don’t worry, I’ll soon cut you down to my size”. Their relationship on and off screen is the stuff of legends. Extreme opposites in every way they found in each other a soul mate, kindred spirits amidst the madness of Hollywood.
Despite his continuing marriage to former actress Louise Treadwell, their love was an open secret. Hepburn retired at the height of her career for five years to nurse the ailing Spencer and in 1967.
