Space Shuttle Challenger Explodes 1986
On January 28th 1986 the US Space Shuttle Challenger exploded shortly after lift-off killing its crew of seven. The spacecraft disintegrated over the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Florida, 73 seconds into its flight.
Among the crew was a school teacher Christa McAuliffe selected to be the first in the “citizen in space” programme. The accident was said to have occurred when an O-ring seal in its right solid rocket booster failed at lift-off.
