Hollywood Remembers Robert Mitchum

Robert Mitchum had difficulty holding down jobs. Aged 16 he was arrested for vagrancy. Among his various jobs he worked on a Georgia chain gang, was a bouncer and a promoter to an astrologer. Retaining his characteristic nonchalance throughout, Mitchum found security in his childhood sweetheart, who he married at the age of 23 in 1940.

He made his bid for stardom in 1945 in The Story of G.I. Joe, winning a nomination for best supporting actor. His finest hour was as a phoney preacher and psychopath in The Night of the Hunter (1955) and an evil ex-con in Cape Fear (1962).
