Hollywood Couples: Rita Hayworth and Orson Wells
The hottest property in Hollywood, Rita Hayworth fell in love with actor Victor Mature in 1943 on a film set. She divorced her first husband, then after announcing her marriage to Mature, she wed Orson Welles instead.
Co-starring in Welles' film noir classic The Lady of Shanghai (1948), the project seemed doomed. Repeatedly rewriting lines during shooting, Welles created an atmosphere of acute stress, which resulted in the highly-strung performances he wanted, but sacrificed his marriage. Afterwards the shattered Hayworth filed for divorce and the film release was delayed for a year.
