President Ford Sworn In 1974

Gerald Ford was sworn in as President after the resignation of Richard Nixon in August 1974. Ford was the only person to become Vice-President and President without having been voted into either office. He immediately gave Nixon an unconditional pardon for his part in the Watergate scandal.

On November 17th, Ford visited Japan, the first visit by an American President, where he met with Emperor Hirohito and Prime Minister Tanaka. On November 23rd Ford met with Leonid Brezhnev, General Secretary of the Communist Party of the USSR, in Vladivostok, to sign a joint communiqué on the SALT treaty.
