Plane Flies Faster Than Sound, 1948
Believed to be the fastest plane in the world, the Air Force's XS-1 rocket plane makes a test flight in California.
The sleek supersonic craft carries only a limited fuel supply, so is taken aloft in the modified bomb bay of a B29 and dropped out in mid air. Again in the cockpit of the rocket plane is Captain Chuck Yeager, who has piloted every test since it was developed.
