Joanne Woodward understudied on Broadway and made her screen debut in 1955 and winning an Oscar two years later for her performance in The Three Faces of Eve. Since her marriage to Paul Newman in 1958, she has acted in many of his films. In Rachel, Rachel (1968) she earned an Oscar nomination and then won the best actress award at Cannes for The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds (1972) both directed by Newman.
