Hollywood Remembers Paul Newman
Paul Newman was the son of a Jewish storeowner and a Catholic mother of Hungarian descent. He broke into Broadway and eventually the movies aged 30, despite a weak debut in The Silver Chalice (1955).
He was married to Jackie Witte from 1949-1957 and during this period ascended rapidly in Hollywood, winning acclaim and awards for The Long Hot Summer (1958) and an Oscar nomination for Cat on A Hot Tin Roof (1958) opposite Elizabeth Taylor. He met second wife Joanne Woodward in 1953, and they married in 1958.
