Nelson Mandela Released 1990

On February 11th 1990 Nelson Mandela was released from Victor Verster Prison in Paarl, South Africa. He had been in prison since 1962. Mandela’s release came after State President F.W. de Klerk reversed the ban on the ANC and other anti-apartheid organisations. 

Albie Sachs, an attorney who defended people charged under racist statutes and repressive security laws under South African Apartheid, returned to South Africa after years in exile. Meanwhile, Winne Mandela appeared in court charged with abducting and killing an alleged informer, 14 year-old Stompie Moeketsi in January 1989.
