Lullaby of Harlem
During the roarin’ 20s Harlem became home to the hottest jazz club ever, The Cotton Club.
The now legendary Duke Ellington’s first engagement at the club was leading his group The Washingtonians. Asked to provide cabaret music to accompany lush vibrant floorshows, the management’s aim was to transport the white American audience to the Deep South or the depths of the African jungle. Ellington rose to the task, his dictum being that there are only two kinds of music, good or bad. His was always good.
