The Inauguration of Ronald Reagan 1981
On January 20th 1981 Ronald Reagan was inaugurated as the 40th president of the United States. In the 1980 election the Republican former Governor of California beat the Democratic incumbent Jimmy Carter, winning 44 states of 50.
On March 30th President Reagan was wounded in an assassination attempt as he left a Washington hotel where he had been addressing a group of trade unionists. He was shot by John Hinckley III, the son of a Denver oil executive.
