Hurricane Katrina 2005
In August 2005 the Category 5 Hurricane Katrina battered the city of New Orleans and much of the south-east of the United States with heavy rain and 145 miles-per-hour winds that ripped away pieces of roofs, knocked out power and flooded homes.
In New Orleans, terrifying floods swept through the heart of the city when a levee was breached by the pressure of water outside the city. Within hours floodwaters covered 80 percent of one of the nation’s largest cities. Fires erupted and raged as fire fighters were unable to reach flooded homes and businesses. Looters roamed the streets, and the mayor declared martial law.
