Hollywood Musicals Of The 1950s
The 1950s were the heyday of the musical. Gene Kelly was at the pinnacle of his career. Playing the part of romantic heroes, he vied for the attentions of a series of beautiful women in Technicolor extravaganzas, with dazzling choreography, brilliant direction and unforgettable tunes.
With Stanley Donen, Kelly directed and choreographed An American in Paris (1951) and Singin' in the Rain (1954). Composer and lyricist talent was not lacking either. Irving Berlin, Ira and George Gershwin, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein III churned out hit after hit throughout the decade.
