Hollywood Animal stars
Lassie is one of the most famous animal stars. First appearing in a film with a very young Roddy McDowall in 1943, Lassie and her descendants starred in six sequels. Greer Garson in Furs as she was once described, stayed in a suite costing $380 a day when she made personal appearances at RKO City Music Hall.
Since 1951 animals have won PATSY awards, the animal star's version of the Oscar, presented by the Animal Humane Association. The acceptance speeches are slightly different to those of their human counterparts.
