Animals have played a key role throughout cinema history, whether real or animated. Some became stars and many had their own series. Lassie, Rin Tin Tin, Benji, Champion the Wonder Horse, Francis the Mule, Flipper the porpoise and Cheta the chimp are only a select few.
Only recently Babe the pig won animal stars a new group of fans. During filming, the intense training and patience required for all concerned is notorious, and nowadays a special union protects animal rights.
