Hollywood Remembers Gina Lollobrigida
Gina Lollobrigida or 'La Lollo' was a carpenter's daughter, born in Subiaco, Italy. She became a star in Europe long before Hollywood laid eyes on her. Although she trained as a commercial artist, she started work as a model and after making her name as a beauty queen, made her screen debut in 1946.
She had a huge following in France, where a new word was even coined to convey the real meaning of curvaceous - lollobrigidienne. Her debut in Hollywood was delayed due to protracted contract disputes with Howard Hughes, but when she eventually appeared she became an instant hit.
