George H.W. Elected US President 1989
On January 20th 1989 Republican George H.W. Bush was inaugurated as the 41st President of the United States. He succeeded Ronald Reagan, under whom he served as Vice-President. In the presidential election of 1988 Bush had beaten the Democratic Nominee, Michael Dukakis by 426 electoral college votes to 111.
He chose Senator Dan Quayle of Indiana as his running mate, as he was a favourite of the conservatives, but proved to be a liability with doubt about his military record, questions about his private life and his evasive manner with the media.
