Famine in Ethiopia 1985
In 1984 the musician Bob Geldof set up the charity Band Aid after watching a television news report from famine-stricken Ethiopia. He arranged the recording of “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” for the Christmas market.
The single surpassed the hopes of the producers to become the Christmas number one on release and going on to sell over three million copies. This was followed by Live Aid, a mammoth event staged simultaneously at Wembley Stadium in London and John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia on July 13th 1985.
