When the Beatles and other British bands arrived on the scene in the 1960s Elvis lost his place at the top of the charts; in the 1970s, however, he made a huge comeback. Welcomed back by old fans, he also won over a new generation.
Despite his popularity, Elvis was badly ill. Hugely overweight and addicted to a lethal cocktail of uppers and downers, he died from a massive heart attack in 1977.
Graceland, his Memphis home, is now a museum and shrine to the star, visited by thousands of flocking fans.
