The Many Faces of Dick Tracy

Chester Gould created legendary private eye Dick Tracy in his immortal cartoon strip. Brought to the screen in 1937 starring Ralph Byrd, the character was an instant success.

In 1939 and 1941 Byrd reprised the role with his deadly nemesis the mad Doctor Zanoff. By 1945, actor Morgan Conway had replaced Byrd and the role of Tracy’s love interest had grown, with Tess Trueheart helping him through the never-ending battle with Splitface Mike. Warren Beatty brought Dick Tracy back in 1990 in the title role, distracted from the task in hand - defeating Big Boy Caprice - by Madonna’s Breathless Mahoney.
