Collapse of the Communist Party in Czechoslovakia, 1989

After months of pro-democracy demonstrations in Czechoslovakia, the communist party collapsed in December 1989 and its leaders, including President Gustav Husak and party chief Milos Jakes resigned.

Dissident playwright and leader of Civic Forum, Vaclav Havel was elected president and an interim coalition government took over.
