Hollywood Remembers Clark Gable

Married twice previously to women 14 and 17 years his senior, Gable fell madly in love with Carole Lombard during the filming of Gone With The Wind. They married in 1939. When Lombard was tragically killed in a plane crash in 1942 he took brave refuge in the air force and rose in rank from lieutenant to major, receiving the Flying Cross and Air Medal.

Three years later he returned to films, having gained weight and with shattered nerves. Drinking heavily and shaking on camera, the king was toppling; his MGM contract, which expired in 1955, was not renewed.
