Civil Rights Freedom March, 1965
The long anticipated 54-mile Freedom March from Selma to Alabama's capital of Montgomery finally gets under way led by Rev. Martin Luther King. Twice before the marchers had been turned back by State troops. Now they march under a Federal Court Order and with the protection of federalized National Guard units and regular troops.
No incidents of consequence occur during the early stages of the non-violent protest march which hopes to gather additional supporters along the way and culminate in presentation of a petition to Governor Wallace at the state capital.
