Chechnya 1995
In Chechnya the war between separatists and the Russian Army continued in 1995. The Russians attacked the Chechen capital of Grozny. Thousands of civilians died in a series of air raids and artillery bombardment. The fighting then became urban warfare. There were heavy casualties on both sides.
On January 19th Russian troops seized the ruins of the presidential palace, which had been the scene of battle for three weeks. The war continued in the rural areas throughout the year. There were protests in Moscow against the war and people wanting their soldiers to come back.
