Hollywood Couples: Carole Lombard and Clark Gable

Carole Lombard was a leading lady of the 1930s, a natural comedienne. After a change of name she proceeded to play a string of blonde heroines in slapstick comedies and then feature films, and emerged as a star opposite John Barrymore in Howard Hawks' Twentieth Century (1934) and in her final film, Ernst Lubitsch's To Be or Not To Be (1942).

She was killed at her peak during a US Bond-selling tour of the mid-west, when her plane crashed into a mountainside. Her inconsolable husband Clark Gable received a heartfelt telegram from President F D Roosevelt, and a nation mourned her loss.
