Berlin Wall Opens, 1964
Fog-shrouded Berlin is a bright place as the Wall of Shame is opened for visits from both the East and the West. Thousands wait at the barrier in West Berlin, the vanguard of 120.000 who visit East Berlin in four days reuniting many families who have been separated since the Soviets divided the city in 1961.
Meanwhile, the East German Communists have allowed the elderly and the ill into West Germany, but significantly, no able-bodied workers are allowed to enter.
