Berlin Wall Falls 1989

In 1989 the Berlin Wall separating West and East Berlin was demolished. The wall had divided the city for over 28 years and came to symbolize the Iron Curtain between Western and Eastern Europe.

After weeks of mass demonstrations and civil unrest against the government in East Germany, it was announced, in November, that citizens of East Germany could visit West Germany. Crowds of East Germans climbed onto and over the Wall and West Germans started to gather beside it. In what was possibly a symbolic gesture people started chipping away at the wall and eventually industrial machinery was brought in to complete the job of tearing it down.
