Symphony of Swing

Benny Goodman and his Orchestra came to the Paloma Ballroom in Pasadena making history one summer evening in 1935. Whilst Goodman never invented swing, nor did he claim to, he spread the word, earning himself the uncontested title King of Swing.

In a concert at New York’s Carnegie Hall Goodman paid tribute to the musicians, black and white, who created swing. From St Louis to New York and Chicago to Kansas City, the contributions of the Original Dixieland Jazz Band, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Jelly Roll Morton, Fletcher Henderson, King Oliver and not forgetting the indefatigable Louis Armstrong, were essential.
