Hollywood Remembers Anthony Quinn
Born in Chihuahua, of Mexican-Irish extraction, Anthony Quinn suffered prejudice in the early days of his career for his exotic looks, "They said all I was good for was playing Indians".
After a decade as a bit-part actor he won the Stanley Kowalski role in A Streetcar Named Desire on Broadway, which led to Oscar-winning supporting roles in Viva Zapata (1952) alongside Marlon Brando and Lust for Life (1956) with Kirk Douglas. Federico Fellini also cast him as middle-aged bully Zampano in the neo-realist classic La Strada (1954) and as an Italian rancher in Wild is the Wind (1957) with Anna Magnani.
