Academy Award Winners First 50 Years: Volume 1

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences was created in 1927 with the noble aim, “to improve the artistic quality of the film medium.” It is a forum comprising 5,000 members, selected by invitation, each representing the various crafts involved in the film industry. Past presidents have included Gregory Peck, Arthur Freed, Bette Davis, Frank Capra, Douglas Fairbank Sr. and Karl Malden.
